The Virtual Learning Operations (VLOps) Team oversees courses of the MOOC (massive open online course) modality. MOOCs are asynchronous learning, meaning learners can consume the course at their own pace/time while that course content is available. Each MOOC will have a primary moderator assigned to it and a secondary moderator to serve as a backup.

The moderator team works in partnership with the VLOps team.  The primary purpose of the moderator is to address questions from participants throughout the course. Additionally, moderators also complete these roles and responsibilities:

  • Quality assurance – checking course content prior to release (specifically around course functionality, course points/completions requirements, review course communications)
    • This is to ensure a good learner experience, if there are concerns that the learner may not understand what is expected of them in the course, any concerns should be flagged for review with the broader team
  • Responsible for roster management at course launch (course rosters are uploaded into the platform [if necessary])
  • Setup and maintain communication lists and distribution of course information, update communications from course instance to instance for specific course links, dates and times, as needed
  • Sending course communications to participants via Easy Mail Merge
  • Provide support, address questions from course participants (authentications issues, course completions questions, cancellation requests, etc.)
    • If the moderator is unsure of a questions, they can escalate to the VLOps team to assist
  • Pull report of 0-point participants and remove from the platform (if necessary)
  • Provide forum support, i.e. live sessions or learning circles (if necessary)
  • Reconcile learners in the learning management system
  • Support virtual badges and getting that information out to students who successfully pass the course  (if necessary)
  • Cloning new instances of courses in the platform
  • Maintain and update process documentation of duties, consult the VLOps team as need and recommend process improvements when they can benefit the team and/or learners
